Have you heard about las posadas? These Mexican celebrations, which are full of joy and tradition, begin on December 16 and last until Christmas Eve.
The posadas are a much loved and longed for Mexican tradition. It’s a time when friends, family or co-workers gather to celebrate and appreciate what has been shared during the year.
Mexicans take these parties very seriously. Food, music, and dance are shared and traditional piñatas are broken, regardless of age or social status.
Families, Song and Punch
Entire families travel long distances to be close to their loved ones on these dates. If they are unable to, they celebrate with their closest ones or their neighbors. These traditional Mexican festivities include an authentic fruit punch, which is only prepared at this time. There are also Christmas carols, sung by the host who lets us in. These are a representation of the journey of Joseph and Mary and the birth of Jesus.
Christmas aguinaldos are prepared in paper bags, which are then filled with candy. Traditionally these gifts would come with fruits or snacks instead. These festivities are so important that international or small companies have adapted to the tradition, giving their employees or collaborators a party or an extra salary in gratitude for their efforts every day.
Noche Buena
On December 24 the posadas come to an end and we celebrate the Noche Buena. And on the following day after Christmas spent eating the reheated food from the night before. In the company of family or loved ones, no matter where you are in Mexico, you will always be well received with a big hug, food and maybe a shot of tequila. This Mexican tradition embraces those who are not close to their family, or those who have suffered a great loss. It’s a time to give with the heart and embrace those who are not with you or have transcended to another plane.
We invite you to receive the love that Mexico has in abundance to be part of this exceptional message and community.
